Call for bridge over the A505 at Royston

The campaign has been out raising awareness of the obstacle that the A505 presents to non motorised transport. This is a phenomenally busy piece of 70MPH dual carriageway with no sensible means of crossing from the paths leading up to it. You only have to look at the grass worn back to dirt in places between the large roundabouts to show you there is demand for foot and cycle travel around this area. Links to education, leisure, retail and work places are severely impeded by the poor crossing. Read about the activity in the CEN here.

Work now finised on new cycle track

The section of cycle track from Frog End to Foxton is now complete. Posts have been moved and the final surface laid. A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make this happen. It’s a great start for the rest of the route. The clearing back of other sections has really helped as well.

Royston Repair Cafe

The Repair Cafe is an idea originally from the Netherlands, where people bring along all sorts of items (furniture, clothes, bikes, jewellery, electrical etc.) that need repairing and with the help of a skilled amateur or professional, learn how to mend them, rather than disposing of them at the tip and contributing to ever-increasing landfill.

The Royston Repair Cafe is holding its first event on Sunday 9 February, 10am-3pm at Meridian – details at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/royston-repair-cafe-tickets-9844376796 – do spread the word.

If any handy bicycle mechanics might be able to spare an hour or two to help out with any bike repairs, please get in touch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Video: A ride from Royston to Trumpington

This video was made on behalf of all cyclists and potential ‘would be’ cyclists who commute and work along this very busy route. It helps underline why cyclists, for reasons of their safety, need to be separated from busy A10 road traffic and also highlights the need for a safe crossing over the busy A505.
Royston, Melbourn, Cambridge and the surrounding villages in the area supply pools of workers who need to safely commute along this route.

A10 Cycle Path: final surfacing of first stretch

The new cycle path between Foxton and Shepreth is taking shape, and while not quite yet officially open, offers an enticing prospect of cycle riding to come.

Between Foxton Bottom and Fowlmere Road, the path will receive its final surface treatment in the next few days.

Work has moved steadily toward the Cambridge Motel. The motel entrance area will be done last, so as to minimize disruption during the busy Christmas and new year season. Instead work will now move south toward the Frog End junction, and then back to the motel entrance last thing – probably mid-late January.

Another aspect of the current project is to clear back the vegetation on and around the path between Foxton and Harston, all being well before Christmas. The surface is in good condition but is less than a metre wide. The clearance work should restore a 1.5 metre width. Eventually, it is hoped that that path can be widened to the same 2.5 metre width now being applied between Foxton and Shepreth.

Also looking ahead, the Melbourn to Royston path now seems firmly on the County Council radar, and our upcoming meetings with Hertfordshire colleagues should help to push us along in the right direction.

And finally: a soup and hot chocolate party is planned to celebrate the Foxton-Shepreth path – keep an eye out at here for details.

Many thanks to the building crew for doing such a great job.
