Awareness Ride May 18th

The annual A10 Awareness Cycle Ride will take place on Sunday May 18th.
Two cycle groups will set off simultaneously at 10AM, one from Trumpington Park and Ride and one from Royston Heath, convening at Phillimore’s Garden Centre at around 11:15.  Julian Huppert MP will see off the Trumpington cyclists, while Oliver Heald MP hopes to see off the Royston cyclists.
Once again, we are very grateful to the Clark family for allowing us to gather at Phillimore’s.  We’ll be a bit further back from the road than last year, in the field on the left as you come in.   Tea and cake will be provided free of charge, thanks to a grant from JR Tech in Shepreth.
The ride will proceed at a leisurely pace, the idea being to highlight the need for a safe and good quality off-road route between Royston and Cambridge and the villages in between.
The ride is not intended to be a form of protest that causes disruption. We use the paths where possible and are courteous to others at all times. It’s an opportunity to publicise our aims and to listen and understand the views of residents of this area of all ages and needs. Read about some of our work in the CEN here

A10 Corridor Cycling Campaign update March 2014

Thank you to everyone who has been in touch about the new Shepreth-Foxton A10 cycle path, and with ideas for other aspects of our local A10 Corridor Cycling Campaign.

All being well weather-wise, between 14-17 March members of the campaign will be out to reseed the verges around the new path to a good standard – a voluntary effort by campaign members of all ages, up to their eighties!   If you’d like to join us please let us know: contacta10cycle@gmail.com.

From Foxton Bottom to Harston the off-road path has been cleared of vegetation and is now about twice as wide as it was.  This is a very old path with weeds popping through, but it is in much better condition than the old section of Foxton-Shepreth path now upgraded.   However, Cambridgeshire County Council would like to find funding to upgrade the Foxton-Harston section to the same 2.5 metre width and some possibilities are on the radar.

From Hauxton to Trumpington, the Trumpington Meadows developer has promised to start work on the off-road path via the farm track, in a few weeks’ time.  Our job is to politely pester him at regular intervals!

As for the Melbourn-Royston route, Herts County Council is now engaged in a feasibility study for improving the A505 roundabout crossing and Cambridgeshire County Council has identified a grant funding source for upgrading the path.  As a campaign group we are actively supporting both efforts.

As you will already have gathered, Cambridgeshire County Council doesn’t fund new cycle paths but is astute in anticipating and tapping into grant opportunities from central government.  If we didn’t get into the game and try and direct efforts to the A10 corridor, whatever cycling infrastructure funds the council attracts would be spent elsewhere.  Indeed we are competing with the rest of the county, and until we formed this cycling campaign and demonstrated the very strong local interest, no grants were directed to our area.   If you would like to add your support by joining the campaign again please just write to us at contacta10cycle@gmail.com.

Our annual Awareness Ride will be held on Sunday May 18th, starting from Royston Station and Trumpington Park and Ride at around 10AM and convening as last year at Phillimore Garden Centre in Melbourn for tea and cake.  More details coming soon.

The campaign meets next on April 2nd, 7 for 7:30, at the Melbourn Hub: All welcome!
